Concert @ Carnegie Mellon Univ.

Thursday, October 11, 2018
Mellon Institute Auditorium
4400 Fifth Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15213

Duo Cortado returns to Pittsburgh with a fresh program highlighting masterworks of the guitar repertoire, new music by Duo Cortado collaborators, and a hint of jazz. The program features the magnificent Suite Retratos by Radamés Gnatalli which pays homage to four famous South American composers and their respective musical styles. André Jolivet's Sérénade is a masterpiece which shows off Jolivet's sense of harmony and melody, mixing post-modern sensibilities with cheeky allusions to jazz. As proponents of new music, Duo Cortado works with composers to produce a thriving repertoire for two guitars. The program features three works by Duo Cortado's collaborators: Thomas Dempster's twine, Kevin Cope's Newton's Cradle, and George Fetner's at the edge of the world. These works highlight each composer's unique style and provide a glimpse into the contemporary music soundscape. To round out the program, the duo will include three songs by well-known jazz guitarist/composer Ralph Towner.
